Valid 1 year, then renewable for 2-year periods. After 5 years of legal residence retirees can apply for permanent residency, and after 10 years for Spanish citizenship. Residents can access Spain's excellent public health system once registered.

History

Santander, capital of the Cantabria region, grew from a medieval port into one of Spain's most fashionable seaside resorts in the early 20th century, when the royal family summered at the purpose-built Magdalena Palace. A devastating fire in 1941 destroyed much of the medieval center, which was rebuilt in an elegant mid-century style. Today it is a prosperous, refined coastal city - home to the global bank that bears its name - known for its beaches, green landscapes, and high quality of life.

Signature Dish: Rabas

A beloved Cantabrian specialty of tender squid (calamari) cut into strips, lightly battered and fried until golden and crisp, served simply with a squeeze of lemon. A staple of Santander's seafront bars and taverns, rabas are the quintessential local tapa - best enjoyed fresh by the bay with a cold glass of Cantabrian white wine or cider while watching the boats come in.
