Genoa, Italy — Retirement Guide

Region: Europe

Overview

Genoa (Genova) is the historic capital of the Italian Riviera (Liguria) and one of Italy most underrated cities. With a vast medieval old town, UNESCO-listed Renaissance palaces, a mild Mediterranean climate, fresh Ligurian cuisine (the home of pesto and focaccia), and direct access to the Italian Riviera (Cinque Terre, Portofino, Camogli), Genoa offers an authentic, affordable Italian lifestyle far from the tourist crowds of Venice or Florence. Excellent train connections make travel easy, and the city has world-class healthcare.

History

Genoa was one of the great medieval Maritime Republics, alongside Venice, Pisa, and Amalfi. At its peak it controlled trade routes across the Mediterranean and Black Sea and produced explorer Christopher Columbus. The Strade Nuove and Palazzi dei Rolli system - a network of aristocratic palaces used to host visiting dignitaries - is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a unique example of urban planning from the Republic of Genoa era.

Signature Dish: Trofie al Pesto Genovese

Liguria signature dish and the heart of Genoese cuisine - hand-twisted trofie pasta tossed with bright green pesto alla Genovese (DOP Genoese basil, pine nuts, parmigiano, pecorino, garlic, and Ligurian extra virgin olive oil), traditionally served with sliced boiled potatoes and tender green beans mixed in. Pairs beautifully with a crisp white Vermentino di Liguria wine. You will find it at every trattoria from the old port up into the hills.
